The natural beauty of Macrocarpa

How to care for your Macrocarpa furniture

Oiling/Staining

Macrocarpa wood can be left natural, or it can be oiled or stained. Oiling your Macrocarpa furniture is one of the best ways to maintain its integrity. When the timber is sawn and put into exposed conditions and if the timber dries too quickly, it may check/crack. While this occurs in the natural drying process, we want to prevent it opening up too much. This is why each piece of Benchmark Build furniture is put through a double coat oiling process to help protect, enhance and maintain the Macrocarpa wood’s integrity.

How to stain / oil your macrocarpa table and benches, furniture

Natural finish

Left untreated, Macrocarpa will weather to a beautiful soft silver grey with darker streaks and a slightly raised grain. Over time untreated Macrocarpa will become discolored if left in shady and damp areas.  However even after years of exposure, Macrocarpa wood can be refinished to its natural bright clean appearance.

Oiling/Staining

Oiling/staining the timber is like conditioning or moisturizing your face in the morning. It keeps the timber from drying too quickly and helps bring out the grain in the timber. It also protects and repels water.

Staining or painting your Benchmark Build furniture can be done, but please be aware of dark colours. Ensure that dark colours don't absorb too much heat from sunlight as this can cause the timber to dry rapidly.

Protecting your Outdoor furniture

Whilst Macrocarpa is a tough and durable wood, keeping it clean and covered when it is not in use will increase it’s look and life. I recommend moving the furniture to covered patio or to purchase an outdoor furniture cover from your local trader. Taking the extra steps to keep your outdoor furniture protected from harsh weather conditions means you will be able to enjoy them for longer. Give your Macrocarpa a good wash and scrub to remove any bird droppings, dirt and mold with a mild soapy detergent. Make sure it’s fully dry before putting on the cover to avoid the furniture absorbing the moisture and introducing decay.

Macrocarpa’s characteristics

Checking and shake are terms used to describe the natural cracking that occurs in the timber. It's important to understand that they are simply part of the nature of the timber product and make each piece unique.
